Job summary

Gusto is hiring a Staff Engineer for the Developer Productivity - AI Developer Tools team. You will architect the AI platform to accelerate engineering by building a secure, context-aware, AI-native development lifecycle and tools that reduce friction across hundreds of builders.

Your mission includes delivering autonomous agents, RAG workflows, and tooling to self-heal CI/CD pipelines while guiding the engineering org towards scalable, secure AI deployments.

Qualifications

• Seasoned engineer able to navigate massive, complex codebases and deliver production-grade distributed software.
• Proven track record moving AI beyond prototypes with understanding of prompt engineering, RAG, and multi-agent workflows.
• Passionate about developer experience and productivity, building frictionless internal tools.

Responsibilities

• Architect AI core infrastructure and APIs to integrate LLMs into the developer workflow, with agents, RAG, and context delivery.
• Drive technical leadership and vision, implement evals, guardrails, and optimize latency and token spend.
• Collaborate with product engineering, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure scalable, secure AI tooling.
• Identify bottlenecks in the local-to-production lifecycle at scale and improve feedback loops.
• Maintain production-grade AI infrastructure, monitor health, diagnose issues, and mitigate model drift.
