Job summary

Gusto is seeking a Staff Engineer for the Developer Productivity - AI Developer Tools team to architect an AI-native development lifecycle that accelerates engineering velocity. You will design secure, context-aware platforms and build autonomous agents, RAG retrieval, and smart context delivery to streamline workflows.

You will lead with a developer-first mindset, driving strategies for evaluation, safety, latency, and cost, while collaborating across Infra and Security to scale AI tooling.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of systems expertise delivering production-grade distributed software.
• Production AI experience including prompt engineering, RAG architectures, and multi-agent workflows.
• Developer-first mindset focusing on tooling that accelerates engineers.
• Strategic execution with emphasis on data privacy, security, and cost management.
• Exceptional communication translating AI capabilities into infrastructure strategy and cross-functional alignment.
• Strong collaboration across teams to advance shared technical vision.

Responsibilities

• Architect AI Core Infrastructure: design and maintain internal platform integrating LLMs with autonomous agents and RAG for developer workflows.
• Drive Technical Leadership & Vision: establish engineering best practices for AI, with evals, guardrails, and latency/token spend optimization.
• Collaborate & Evangelize: partner with product engineering and core Infra & Security teams to ensure scalable, compliant AI tooling.
