Job summary
Planet is seeking a Harness Manufacturing Engineer in San Francisco to own the in-house harness cell across satellite programs. You will work in the NPI team, partnering with Electrical Engineering, technicians, quality, and supply chain to move harnesses from first article to flight production.
You will build a manufacturing capability from the ground up, with hands-on work on wiring harness fabrication, tooling, and test processes, and you will contribute to continuous improvement in a
Qualifications
- 4+ years of manufacturing development experience with wire harness or cable assembly.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Hands-on knowledge of harness fabrication: wire prep, crimping, solder cup, shield, backshell, potting.
- Working knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 workmanship requirements.
- Experience reading and creating harness drawings and wiring diagrams.
- Experience with harness design and routing CAD such as RapidHarness or SolidWorks Electrical.
- SolidWorks skills to develop tooling/fixturing and verify routing.
- Hands-on experience with hardware assembly, integration, and test.
- Excellent attention to detail and technical writing for assembly/test processes.
Responsibilities
- Own manufacturing engineering and production operations for in-house wire harness cell across satellite programs.
- Develop and document harness assembly procedures, process flows, and cleanroom/ESD protocols.
- Design and deploy tooling, fixtures, workstations, and verification programs (HiPot, pull-tests).
- Partner with Electrical Engineering for DFM/DFA feedback on new harness designs.
- Support vehicle subsystem integration, troubleshoot build issues, and drive nonconformances to resolution.
- Manage make vs buy transitions, qualify external vendors and phase production in-house.
- Participate in hiring and training production technicians for flight production.
- Monitor production metrics and recommend facility/capital equipment improvements.
