Job summary

S:US is seeking a Harm Reduction Specialist in New York, focused on engagement and support for program participants around drug and alcohol use, sexual health, and self-harm using a harm reduction approach.

Qualifications

• Understanding and commitment to the philosophy and mission of S:US with emphasis on harm reduction and recovery oriented services
• Two years of experience in a harm reduction model
• Ability to transfer knowledge in engagement, harm reduction, motivational interviewing, and conflict mediation
• Fingerprinting and clearance by the New York State Justice Center
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Bilingual Spanish-speaking preferred; other languages may be needed depending on participants
• Demonstrated leadership and ability to work as part of a team

Responsibilities

• Using harm reduction to assess needs and plan services for participants at the program site
• Develop and support strategies to meet needs including those who use drugs/alcohol and other at-risk groups
• Attend Harm Reduction Committee meetings and contribute to agency-wide projects
• Provide training on the harm reduction model and HIV prevention strategies
• Provide service coordination and recovery-oriented support to assigned participants
• Develop person-centered service plans and review progress with participants
• Document thoroughly in service records as required by policies and contracts
• Advocate for quality care from external providers and educate on special issues
• Provide outreach to non-engaged participants and offer services
• Provide crisis intervention as necessary
• Provide skills-building support including assertiveness and self-advocacy
• Maintain program and agency standards in all interactions
• Attend supervision, meetings, and trainings; provide holiday/evening/weekend coverage
• Perform other duties as assigned
