Job summary

Cushing Terrell in Helena is seeking a Fire Protection Engineering Intern to support our Fire Protection team on real client projects. This in-person role offers hands-on exposure to sprinkler, alarm, smoke control, and suppression design under licensed engineers.

You will review drawings, perform risk assessments, and assist with hydraulic analysis and other calculations while learning building codes and standards.

Qualifications

• Completion of 3+ years of a mechanical engineering or related undergraduate program
• Basic understanding of building codes and standards
• Basic knowledge of Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and Bluebeam
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn and adapt
• Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with team members across disciplines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

• Assist with fire protection system design, including sprinklers, alarms, smoke control, and suppression systems
• Support fire risk assessments and hazard analyses under the guidance of licensed fire protection engineers
• Review building codes and standards, including NFPA and IBC, for project compliance
• Review construction drawings and specifications for code compliance
• Assist with engineering calculations, including hydraulic analysis and smoke control
• Participate in site visits and inspections to observe system installations
• Gain exposure to the variety of project types and teams across the firm
