Job summary

South Dakota State Government in Pierre, SD is seeking a Grounds Crew Leader/Specialist. You will direct Grounds Keepers and perform maintenance of lawns, trees, flowers, shrubs, sidewalks, snow removal, and pesticide/fertilizer applications as required.

Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional on-call. Benefits include health insurance options, a 6% retirement plan with disability and survivor benefits, life insurance, generous leave, and limited overtime.

Qualifications

• Must possess a Driver's License and CDL with airbrakes within 90 days of hire.
• Commercial applicator's license within 90 days of hire.
• Experience with pesticide and fertilizer application preferred.

We are looking to fill a Grounds Crew Leader/Specialist. The role directs the work of Grounds Keepers and participates in grounds maintenance, including the care of lawns, trees, flowers, shrubs, sidewalks, snow removal; and/or applying pesticides and fertilizer at the appropriate time and in a timely manner.

Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. Will occasionally be required to work outside of the regularly established schedule, which may involve on-call time during nights and weekends at certain times of the year.

Licenses and Certifications

The incumbent must possess or have the ability to obtain a Driver's License, and a Class B CDL with airbrakes, and a commercial applicator's license within 90 days of hire.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

Prior pesticide and fertilizer application experience is preferred. Prior medium and heavy equipment operation would be beneficial.

Knowledge of

• gardening and grounds maintenance practices;


• safe use of fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides;


• landscaping techniques;


• setting forms and pouring concrete; and,


• types and varieties of trees, flowers, and plants.

Ability to

• organize and delegate assignments;


• recognize and diagnose plant diseases;


• identify insect destruction and the necessary corrective actions;


• follow instructions, both orally and in writing;


• perform heavy lifting (50+ lbs) and physical labor; and


• operate motorized vehicles, hand and power tools, and related equipment;

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
