Job summary

Southern Company is seeking a Stability and Special Studies Engineer in Birmingham, Alabama to lead power system studies focused on voltage, rotor angle, and frequency stability. You will collaborate with various internal teams and external partners, evaluating new technologies and presenting results to leadership.

The role blends technical problem-solving with exposure to transmission planning, generation interfaces, and grid modernization initiatives.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering with power systems emphasis preferred.
• Experience in power systems, protection and controls is a plus.
• Knowledge of design, control, and operation of bulk power systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Conduct dynamic and power quality studies for generator interconnection and large interconnection efforts.
• Perform stability, reliability and special studies supporting transmission and generation applications.
• Create models for planning and operation studies and prepare technical reports.
• Collaborate with internal/external stakeholders on system planning and emerging technologies.
• Evaluate impacts of new technologies and evolving industry trends.
• Present findings to engineering staff and management; support standards development.
• Assess impacts of inverter-based resources, data centers, and new assets on reliability.
