UPMC East is pleased to announce we are NOW HIRING Graduate Nurses as full-time Professional Staff Nurses. Graduate Nurse Opportunities are highly sought-after and help recent graduates launch their nursing career at UPMC!

UPMC East Unit Descriptions:

  • 3W Stepdown- The patient population on the Stepdown unit typically requires increased care from MedSurg units but less than ICU. These patients are critically ill but stable at that time.
  • 5E MedSurg/Oncology- This unit’s level of acuity ranges from observation patients to cancer patients requiring chemotherapy transfusions. Once certified, the nurse can administer the chemotherapy.
  • 6W Post-Surgical- The post-surgical nurse is responsible for providing care to the patient following surgery. This includes total hip replacements, knee replacements, broken legs, etc.
  • 6E Rehab- This is an inpatient rehabilitation facility known for their intense rehab schedule following strokes, neurological disorders, limb loss, etc. The nurse is responsible for 24/7 care, ADLs, and getting patients to and from rehab in a timely manner.
  • 4 East Med/Surg- The medical-surgical unit cares for a wide variety of medical and post-op patients, adolescent through geriatric. It also serves as our Telemetry floor, where patients with cardiac conditions will find care.
  • CDU- The Clinical Decision unit is where patients go to be evaluated for a specialty hospital. (ex: critical burns or psychiatric needs)
  • ED- The Emergency Department is a non-age-specific unit that provides care for levels of acuity ranging from chest pain or abdominal pain to stroke, gunshot wounds, or stabbings. This is a fast-paced unit that requires great focus and time-management.

The Professional Staff Nurse provides highly competent patient care and treatment while demonstrating empathy and a passion for learning. A role that requires independent judgment, fluent communication, and candid partnership, the Professional Staff Nurse establishes relationships with physicians, other care providers, patients, and patients’ families to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care.

As a Professional Staff Nurse and a member of the care delivery team, you will set the standards for the level and quality of nursing care and possess authority and accountability for its provision. At all times, you will exemplify a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.

Shifts/Hours:Our RNs work a rotating 12-hour schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor.

Graduate Nurses must be eligible for State Board Licensure and successfully pass the examination before beginning this role OR ability to start with TPP and must obtain license within 6 months amount of time of beginning position. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the My Nursing Career Ladder based on their individual experience and education.

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

License, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • UPMC approved national certification preferred. Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • ACLS required within 1 year of hire date
  • NIH required within 6 months of hire date
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIH)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
