Job summary

Vinson & Elkins seeks a Director of Tax to lead the US and international tax function in Houston. You will own tax compliance, strategy, planning, and risk management for domestic and cross-border matters; manage tax audits and partner-related tax issues; drive process improvements and technology in tax reporting.

The role requires deep knowledge of US and international tax law, strong leadership, and the ability to work with Partners and senior management to optimize the firm’s tax position

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; CPA required, JD with tax background may be considered in lieu of CPA
• Advanced degree strongly preferred (Master of Taxation, JD, or LLM in Taxation)
• Minimum 12–15 years of progressive tax experience, including public accounting and in-house at a large multinational
• At least 5 years of management experience, including leading a tax team
• Experience with large law firm or professional services partnership preferred

Responsibilities

• Oversee preparation of work papers supporting US and non-US tax filings by internal staff and outside advisors
• Lead the firm’s partner tax function including reporting, estimates, and withholding for partners
• Advise on tax implications of partner admissions, lateral hires, and changes in partner status
• Oversee multistate tax compliance and planning for the partnership and partners
• Manage federal, state, local, and non-US tax examinations and disclosures
• Develop and lead tax team through staffing, performance management, and succession planning
• Oversee tax accounting, forecasting, and partner tax distributions
• Develop policies for taxation of globally mobile partners and personnel
