Job summary

Vinson & Elkins is seeking a Director of Tax in New York to lead the US and international tax function, overseeing compliance, strategy, and risk management for the firm’s tax matters. The role reports to the CFO and directs global tax planning and policy development.

The candidate will manage multistate and cross-border issues, coordinate with partners and outside advisors, and build a high-performance tax team while ensuring accurate reporting and adherence to regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance; CPA required. JD with strong tax background may be considered in lieu of CPA.
• Minimum 12–15 years of progressive tax experience, including public accounting and in-house at a large multinational.
• 5+ years of management experience, including building or leading a tax team.

Responsibilities

• Oversees the preparation of work papers supporting US and non-US tax filings; reviews partnership returns and K-1 reporting.
• Leads the firm's partner tax function, including reporting, estimated tax, and withholding for cross-border matters.
• Advises on tax implications of partner admissions, relocations, and other status changes.
• Oversees multistate tax compliance and planning for partnership and partners.
• Manages tax examinations, notices, and controversy matters; develops audit strategy.
