Job summary

Smithfield Foods, Inc. is seeking an Automation & Controls leader to drive architecture, qualification, and compliance for global manufacturing operations in the United States.

You will partner with WH Group teams and OEMs to deploy robotics, machine vision, and digital manufacturing across facilities. The role requires a strong engineering background (Electrical/Controls/Automation), 5+ years in industrial automation, and a willingness to travel extensively.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls, Automation, Robotics or related field.
• 5+ years of relevant experience in industrial automation or manufacturing engineering.
• Strong knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, industrial networking, and machine safety systems.
• Experience with robotics, machine vision, inspection technologies, and safety systems.
• Experience working with global engineering teams and OEMs.
• Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, RIA, NFPA, UL and electrical code requirements.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
• Ability to travel domestically >50% and internationally as required.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and standardization of controls architectures, PLCs, HMIs, and industrial networks.
• Lead qualification and validation of automation, robotics, and machine vision systems.
• Conduct machine safety assessments and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Collaborate with U.S., China, and WH Group teams to transfer proven automation technologies.
• Develop and implement next-gen automation, robotics, and AI-enabled inspection.
• Evaluate processing controls, packaging systems, and end-of-line automation for scalability.
• Perform supplier audits and system validation early in projects.
• Serve as lead for strategic capital projects and equipment design reviews.
