Job summary

CDM Smith in Fairfax, VA is seeking a Junior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Infrastructure Services Group. You will assist in planning, investigation, analysis, and design of geotechnical solutions for transportation, water, environmental, federal, and municipal projects.

You will gain hands-on experience through office and field assignments while building expertise and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across the Mid-Atlantic region and nationwide.

Qualifications

• Intermediate knowledge of computer aided design (CADD) 3D/4D software.
• Knowledge of engineer principles of design.
• Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
• Good written and verbal communications skills.

Responsibilities

• Support geotechnical investigations, subsurface explorations, and field data collection.
• Perform analyses and contribute to shallow and deep foundation design, retaining structures, embankments, dams, levees.
• Evaluate geotechnical data and soil/rock properties to support recommendations.
• Assist with geotechnical reports, specifications, calculations, and construction documents.
• Review designs for compliance with federal, state, local requirements and CDM Smith standards.
• Participate in site visits, field observations, and construction-phase services.
• Use engineering software and geotechnical modeling tools for analyses.
• Collaborate with teams across regions and disciplines.
• Contribute to technical papers, white papers, and knowledge sharing.
• Support conference participation and professional involvement to enhance practice visibility.
