Burns & McDonnell in Phoenix, AZ is seeking an Assistant Geotechnical Engineer to assist project teams under a licensed professional engineer. You will support field reconnaissance, subsurface investigations, and geotechnical design from concept through construction.

You will contribute to data compilation, reports, and construction documentation while working in a collaborative, analytical environment. This entry-level role emphasizes growth toward professional licensure and hands-on project

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field (ABET-accredited preferred).
  • Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Civil Engineering (Geotechnical Emphasis) preferred.
  • Prior internship or related consulting experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of standard geotechnical techniques, principles and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in problem-solving environments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Geotechnical software such as Ensoft LPILE, GeoStudio/UTEXAS4 and liquefaction analysis is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, teamwork and leadership abilities.
  • EIT Certification preferred.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist field reconnaissance and geological research to evaluate site conditions.
  • Help develop scopes of work and subcontracts for subsurface investigations.
  • Assist with compiling geotechnical data and boring logs.
  • Support field observation of site investigations.
  • Contribute to geotechnical design from concept through design completion.
  • Support hazard assessments, foundation design, slope stability and earthwork analyses.
  • Prepare and review calculations, reports, specs, and construction docs.
  • Assist with client presentations and contract administration.
  • Perform geotechnical-related construction observation and other assigned duties.
