Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Assistant Civil Engineer in Phoenix, AZ to assist project teams with world-class civil designs across diverse sectors. You will participate through design and construction, adapting plans to budgets and client needs.

You will support senior engineers in preparing drawings, reviews, and data analysis, while gaining exposure to power, process, and industrial facilities. This role emphasizes collaboration and hands-on learning.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is required or strongly preferred.
• Prior internship and/or related consulting experience is preferred.
• Basic knowledge in standard civil engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
• Basic computer skills (AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM Revit, Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCAD).
• Strong attention to detail, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• EIT Certification preferred.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the civil design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
• Assists with modifying and reviewing production drawings for a variety of projects (power, process, healthcare, industrial, etc.).
• Assists in designing civil components per project manager requirements.
• Applies basic civil engineering concepts, practices, codes, and procedures.
• Assists with research and data compilation, studies and reports.
• Assists with updating drawings to verify corrections in CAD software.
• Assists with client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration.
• Performs field inspections, measurements or calculations for clients.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
