Job Description

This role supports seed production operations throughout the year, with duties that change by season. You will work in a hands‑on production environment to inspect, process, package, and ship seed while operating equipment safely and maintaining high quality standards. The position involves rotating through various tasks, including field support, plant operations, warehousing, and inventory control, to ensure that customers receive the seed they need for each planting season.

Responsibilities
  • Receive and process trucks hauling crop from the field by weighing and unloading them safely and efficiently.

  • Perform a wide range of harvest activities during the fall season, including husking and sorting operations.

  • Operate dryers to dry crop within prescribed safety, quality, and financial requirements.

  • Shell and store crop from bins in the dryer facility according to standard operating procedures.

  • Supply the conditioning department with a consistent and adequate supply of seed.

  • Apply appropriate treatments to seed while following safety and quality guidelines.

  • Label, tag, bag, and palletize seed during the winter months to prepare it for shipment.

  • Enter inventory information accurately into computer systems to maintain up‑to‑date records.

  • Stage seed for shipment in the warehouse, ensuring correct products and quantities are prepared.

  • Retag in‑house seed during the spring and summer as needed to maintain accurate identification.

  • Re‑bag backhaul or returned seed so it can be reused or redistributed appropriately.

  • Inspect pro boxes to ensure they are clean, free of debris, and suitable for use.

  • Wash pro boxes as necessary to meet cleanliness and quality standards.

  • Monitor and operate equipment and facilities, including field equipment, to ensure quality and adherence to standard operating procedures.

  • Maintain safety standards at all times and initiate and follow emergency procedures when necessary.

  • Rotate through various roles within the area, including, in some cases, control room responsibilities.

  • Perform general production, packaging, and machine operation tasks as assigned.

  • Load and unload materials, including unloading trucks, in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Work both independently and as part of a team to complete tasks on time while maintaining seed quality.

  • Adjust to changing conditions, anticipate operational needs, and make independent decisions to support continuous production.

Essential Skills
  • Knowledge of production agriculture and production plant operations.

  • Ability to safely perform duties in a timely manner while maintaining seed quality.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced production environment.

  • Ability to adjust to changing conditions and anticipate operational needs.

  • Ability to make independent decisions within established guidelines.

  • Ability to read English to follow written instructions, labels, and safety information.

  • Ability to speak English clearly enough to communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time during 12‑hour shifts.

  • Ability to climb stairs as needed to access equipment and facilities.

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 60 pounds, work indoors and outdoors, and walk on uneven surfaces.

  • Ability to monitor and operate production, packaging, and field equipment according to standard operating procedures.

  • Must have and wear steel‑toed shoes while on site.

  • Must not be colorblind due to the need to distinguish colors for labels, indicators, or product identification.

  • Ability to follow strict no‑smoking and no‑tobacco policies at the site.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • No formal education requirements; on‑the‑job training is provided.

  • Forklift experience is a plus and may be used in loading, unloading, and warehouse operations.

  • Experience with general labor, production, packaging, machine operation, and inspection is beneficial.

  • Experience in farm work, farm hand duties, or farming operations is an advantage.

  • Comfort working around agricultural products, including seed and related treatments.

  • Willingness to rotate through different roles and tasks based on seasonal needs.

Why Work Here?

You will join a stable, seasonal operation that offers consistent hours and the opportunity to learn a wide range of production and agricultural skills. The role provides a clear pathway to full‑time employment at the end of a six‑month contract, with strong potential for rehire in future seasons. You will benefit from a predictable rotating schedule that offers extended time off each week, allowing for better work‑life balance. The environment values safety, teamwork, and continuous operations, giving you the chance to grow your experience with modern production equipment and warehouse processes.

Work Environment

This position is based in an agricultural production facility focused on seed processing and handling. The environment includes both indoor plant operations and outdoor work around fields, warehouses, and loading areas. You will be exposed to corn, seed treatments, and dust, including insecticide dust used to protect seed before it is sent to and from farms, so you should be comfortable working in a setting that can appear dusty and dirty. The role involves operating and working around production machinery, dryers, shellers, conditioning equipment, pro boxes, and warehouse equipment, and may include forklift use. You must wear steel‑toed shoes and follow all site safety and personal protective equipment requirements. The schedule includes 12‑hour day shifts from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM on a rotating pattern. Employees are assigned to either a Front Half schedule (Sunday through Tuesday, plus a half day on Wednesday morning) or a Back Half schedule (Wednesday afternoon plus Thursday through Saturday), averaging 42 hours per week with approximately 3.5 days on and 3.5 days off. In addition, there are traditional shifts listed as 1st shift from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, 2nd shift from 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM, and 3rd shift from 10:30 PM to 7:00 AM. You must be able to work up to six days per week, with the specific day off staggered. The facility maintains strict safety and cleanliness standards, including a strict prohibition on smoking and tobacco products anywhere on site.
