Job summary

Waco ISD is seeking a General Maintenance Worker II to perform general maintenance and repair of building structures and systems district-wide. This role supports the Foreman - Building Maintenance and may oversee the Apprentice Program as after-hours crew leader.

Requires 3 years of general maintenance experience, a high school diploma or GED, and the ability to operate hand and power tools. Evening and weekend work may be required in this role.

Qualifications

Job Title: General Maintenance Worker II

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt/At-Will

Reports To: Foreman - Building Maintenance

Pay Grade/Days:305/240

Dept./School: Maintenance

Primary Purpose: Perform general maintenance and repair of building structures and their mechanical, electrical, and sanitary systems throughout the district. Assist with maintenance of grounds.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED certificate

Associate Degree preferred

Trade Certification preferred (Examples: HVAC, Electrical, Building Construction, Plumbing)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of computers preferred
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Knowledge of construction and routine maintenance and repair procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbally)
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work at heights is required
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment preferred
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends

Experience

Three (3) years’ experience in general building maintenance.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist skilled workers with repair and maintenance of district facilities, including repairing woodwork; installing floor tile (ceramic AND vct); painting, repairing, and replacing plumbing, electrical, and HVAC equipment.
  • Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds; perform maintenance and minor repairs as needed.
  • Detect and report needed repairs on building structures, including lockers, furniture, equipment, and flooring.
  • Assist with roof repairs (metal, shingles, built-up, etc.) as needed.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks as directed.
  • Stripe and paint parking lots and curbs as needed.
  • Assist with the installation of portable buildings as needed.
  • Receive and complete work orders as directed by maintenance foreman.
  • Assist with mowing and detailing of district grounds.
  • Move, install, assemble, and repair all school furniture and playground equipment as needed.
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed.
  • Responsible for overseeing the Apprentice Program as the after-hours crew leader
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate equipment and use tools according to established safety procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in working order.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise the Student Apprentice Program as the after-hours crew leader

Equipment Used: Various hand tools, such as drills, socket set, screwdrivers, and test equipment and recovery machine and gauges.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Tools/Equipment Used: Small hand tools, power tools, and measuring tools; truck, van, and heavy equipment

Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel
