Job Title: Custodian - Head Middle School
Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt
Reports To: Custodial Supervisor
Pay Grade/Days: 305/240
Dept./School: School Assigned

Primary Purpose

Supervise the campus custodial operations. Establish and follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds. Maintain a clean and safe working environment where teachers can teach and students can learn.

Qualifications
  • Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED certificate
  • Valid Texas driver license
  • Must be eligible to drive based on the Texas DPS School Transportation Guidelines
  • Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
  • Demonstrated competency in building custodial maintenance and personnel supervision
  • Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and furniture, and to properly handle cleaning supplies and equipment
  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience in custodial services preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Custodial Management
  1. Direct and monitor the work of custodians at assigned campus.
  2. Help screen, select, and train custodians.
  3. Direct and assist in setting up facilities for special events.
  4. Direct and monitor Lead Custodians.
Cleaning
  1. Implement and maintain established cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
  2. Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean.
  3. Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
  4. Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and order additional supplies as needed.
Maintenance and Repair
  1. Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables and chairs.
  2. Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and insure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
  3. Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to principal.
  4. Move furniture or equipment within building as directed by principal.
Safety
  1. Assume responsibility for opening and closing building each school day.
  2. Oversee procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
  3. Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bars are working properly during hours of building occupancy.
  4. Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
  5. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  6. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, stripping floors, etc.
  7. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used
  • Buffer, stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, electric drill, mop, broom, carpet extractor, carpet shampooer, ladder (up to 12 ft.), and any equipment associated with custodial trades.
Working Conditions

  • Maintain emotional control under stress. People intensive. Frequent interruptions.
  • Position requires strenuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing, climbing stairs/ladders, twisting, grasping, squeezing, reaching (including overhead). The applicant must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • The applicant will work indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including hot/cold temperature swings, and inclement weather.
  • The applicant will work with chemicals, exposure to dust, and slippery and uneven walking surfaces.
