Summary
The General Maintenance Worker reports to the Manager of Facilities Planning and Operations Management. Under general supervision and within Brown University Health policies and procedures, performs routine repair and maintenance functions at Brown University Health outreach sites.

Responsibilities

  1. Receives work orders for a wide range of repair/maintenance requests at various Brown University Health Affiliate off-site locations. Performs rebuilding/repairing furniture, walls, windows, and frames; installs and replaces countertops, floor and ceiling tiles; installs fixtures; repairs drywall, handrails, locks, hardware, ceramic tiles, wall hangings, and similar projects. Installs, repairs, and adjusts keyboard trays. Removes and replaces HIPAA bins. Tasks may include plastering, painting, staining, varnishing, wallpapering, applying sealant, and decorating interior surfaces, woodwork, trimmings, furniture, and equipment. Moves and relocates office furniture and equipment.
  2. Resolves minor plumbing and electrical problems that do not require licensed tradespersons. Activities include installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, faucets, eye wash stations, emergency showers, and related equipment. Installs and replaces bulbs, batteries in emergency lighting fixtures, and checks breakers, plugs, and switches for proper operation. Performs initial evaluation to determine if a project requires a licensed electrician or plumber.
  3. Completes inspections of fire extinguishers and emergency lights.
  4. Performs grounds work as directed, including trash pickup, sweeping, maintaining landscaping beds, and other areas.
  5. Assists with snow and ice removal at all off-site locations using equipment provided by Brown University Health.
  6. Communicates with customers regarding work schedule and completion times.
  7. Completes basic records such as work orders, requisitions, and vehicle inspection sheets.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Other Information

Basic Knowledge: High School Graduate or equivalent GED, vocational courses in HVAC or related trades preferred. Certification in construction or building specialties is preferred. Knowledge of all maintenance and repair trades is essential.

Experience: Minimum two to three years in a journeyman-level skilled labor position. Work involves indoor and outdoor environments, travel, working at heights, exposure to various weather conditions, and physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing, reaching, twisting, lifting, and operating tools and vehicles. Must have a valid driver’s license, dependable vehicle, proof of insurance, and a good driving record.
