Job description

The General Maintenance Worker performs general maintenance and repair of equipment and buildings requiring practical skill and knowledge (but not proficiency) in such trades as HVAC, painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and electrical work. Work involves a variety of the following duties: replacing electrical ballast, lamps, receptacles, wires, switches, fixtures, and motors, using plaster or compound to patch minor holes and cracks in walls and ceilings, repairing or replacing sinks, water coolers, and toilets painting structures and equipment; repairing or replacing concrete floors, steps, and sidewalks, replacing damaged paneling and floor tiles, hanging doors and installing door locks, replacing broken window panes, and performing general maintenance on equipment and machinery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Including but not limited to)

  • Performs general maintenance tasks as directed by Supervisor on time and to specification.
  • Completes service orders with accurate information to include labor hours and materials used to complete the task.
  • Observes and practices safe working procedures.
  • Complies with Standing Operations Procedures.
  • Ensures timecard is accurately completed on a daily basis.
  • Participates in a variety of departmental and other meetings on a regular basis.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned by management and/or supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidate must be a U.S. citizen.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three or more years of experience in the general maintenance trade supplemented by one year experience as a General Maintenance Worker.
  • Driver’s license and proof of current automobile insurance and the ability to travel to local facilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, and tools of the general maintenance trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable building codes and specifications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the general maintenance trade.
  • Ability to read, interpret, prepare and work from plans, drawings, and sketches.
  • Ability to perform and instruct others in a variety of skilled general maintenance work.
  • Ability to make accurate estimates of time and materials required to complete a job.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and present information and respond to questions from vendors, customers, management, and others in a professional and timely manner.
  • Have a good working knowledge of computer applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must have strong organizational skills.
  • Must be capable of lifting to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to pass required criminal background check and pass pre-employment drug testing.

  • Experience and knowledge of Alaska Native cultures.

Physical Demands

  • Work involves moderate to heavy work in all types of conditions. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the workday. Considerable reaching, stooping, kneeling and crouching may be required.
  • May work with sharp and or rough materials, including but not limited to using sharp tools and power equipment, and working in situations where safety must be a top priority.
