Indianapolis Public Library is seeking a Library Security Assistant at the Irvington Branch in Indianapolis, IN. This full-time role covers day, evening and weekend hours and involves both customer service and security duties to keep the library safe and welcoming.

You will de-escalate incidents, monitor entry points, enforce the library's Behavioral Policy, and report safety concerns. Strong communication and teamwork are essential in a busy public space.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Post-secondary education preferred.
• Oral and written communication skills.
• Previous security experience preferred.
• Bilingual is a plus.
• Ability to lift 20–50 lbs and stand for long periods.
• Proficient computer and office skills; attention to detail.
• Knowledge of safety hazards and risk management.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize.

Responsibilities

• De-escalate while ensuring patron compliance with security rules.
• Document and resolve conflicts.
• Work in an environment with constant public contact.
• Demonstrate flexibility and strong interpersonal skills with patrons and staff.
• Creatively solve problems and handle stressful situations.
• Respond to emergencies and incidents promptly per policy.
• Inspect and patrol premises regularly.
• Provide high quality customer service and build relationships with the community.
• Enforce the library's Behavior Policy with Manager or Person-In-Charge.
