The Windsor Heights Fire Department provides 24-hour, fire and ambulance coverage to the City of Windsor Heights. The mission of the Windsor Heights Fire Department is to improve the quality of life and safety of our citizens by providing the highest level of customer service through Fire Prevention, Community Risk Reduction, Emergency Response, and Training.

Summary Description

Firefighter/Paramedics perform fire suppression, rescue operations, fire prevention activities (e.g., public education, fire inspections, etc.) and patient care in emergent and non-emergent settings. Firefighter/Paramedics perform routine vehicle, tool and facility maintenance daily and these positions assist with various administrative duties, including property fire inspections within the City.

Salary and Benefits

Paramedic/Firefighter salary range $64,445 - $76,599, with opportunities for overtime regularly provided. Additional benefits include:

Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergencies (e.g., fire, medical, rescue, man-made/natural disasters, etc.).
  • Provides emergency medical treatment within the scope of practice of current level of certification.
  • Provides accurate medical documentation of all emergency medical treatment provided.
  • Ensures fire code enforcement by performing fire/life safety facility inspections.
  • Performs routine truck and equipment maintenance, station maintenance and routine facility duties.
  • Performs various public education activities to enhance the reputation of the Fire Department.
  • Maintains proper physical fitness through regular exercise.
  • Participates and assists with coordination/planning of Fire/EMS related training.
  • May be assigned various duties, which may include inventory and ordering of medications, inventory and ordering of supplies, updating and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures and Protocols.
  • Responsible for driving of emergency vehicles and adhering to all department policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Fire Fighter I certification or equivalent required; Fire Fighter II preferred; Driver/Operator Preferred.
  • Current Paramedic and BLS CPR certifications required.

Supplemental Information

Candidates will be required to successfully complete the Central Iowa Fire and EMS Testing Consortium process, unless they have passed either a CPAT or the Consortium testing within the past twelve (12) months and can provide supporting documentation.

Finalist candidates will participate in an on-site oral interview panel prior to conditional offer of employment.

Post offer pre-employment drug test, background check, and medical physical required.

Residency within 1 hour response time to their primary work facility.
