Join the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire District

The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire District is currently accepting applications for full-time Firefighter/EMT and Firefighter/Paramedic positions (FF/PM preferred).

Applicants must possess a valid Iowa driver's license. Minimum requirements include certification as an Iowa or National Firefighter I (Firefighter II preferred), Hazardous Materials Operations, and Iowa Emergency Medical Technician – Basic certification or Paramedic certification.
Copies of all required certifications must be submitted with your application.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and less than 65 years old.

Wages for July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026

Step 1 Firefighter/EMT: $62,105	Step 1 Firefighter/Paramedic: $70,224
Step 2 Firefighter/EMT: $64,589	Step 2 Firefighter/Paramedic: $73,033
Step 3 Firefighter/EMT: $67,173	Step 3 Firefighter/Paramedic: $75,955
Step 4 Firefighter/EMT: $69,859	Step 4 Firefighter/Paramedic: $78,993
Step 5 Firefighter/EMT: $72,654	Step 5 Firefighter/Paramedic: $82,153

To qualify for Steps 2-5 (Lateral Entry), applicants must provide proof of full-time experience in a comparable agency for two or three years.

The district operates 3 stations with 3-5 personnel each on a 48/96-hour schedule, responding to over 4,200 calls annually.

Additional Information

Applicants should have a current (within 1 year) physical agility evaluation (PAE) and pass a written exam conducted by the Central Iowa Fire and EMS Testing Consortium. More details are available here.

Candidates will participate in interviews with Chief Officers and mid-level supervisors. Interview dates and times are to be determined and will be held at 6373 Merle Hay Road, Johnston, IA 50131.

Post-offer, all positions require a criminal background check, drug test, and physical exam.
