Role Summary

The Custodian follows routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain safe, clean, efficient, and fully operational buildings and grounds so district facilities remain ready to support teaching, learning, and daily operations.

Key Responsibilities
Cleaning
  • Maintain an efficient cleaning schedule for floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
  • Keep buildings and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean.
  • Comply with applicable local requirements and district procedures for trash storage and disposal.
  • Help maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed.
Maintenance and Repair
  • Assist with lunchroom setup, including arranging tables and chairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to support the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff.
  • Regulate heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems to maintain appropriate temperatures and economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Complete minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to the principal or designee.
  • Move furniture or equipment within the building as directed.
  • Assist with facility setup for special events.
Safety
  • Assist with opening and closing the building each school day.
  • Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
  • Check daily during building occupancy to ensure exit doors are open and panic hardware operates properly.
  • Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Use established safety procedures and techniques when lifting, climbing, and performing other job duties.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and immediately report conditions that cannot be corrected to the supervisor.

  • Supplies and equipment are used safely, maintained appropriately, and replenished in a timely manner.
  • Unsafe or uncorrectable conditions and major repair needs are reported promptly.
  • Students, staff, families, and visitors receive professional, respectful, and service-oriented support.
  • District procedures, Board policy, attendance expectations, and supervisor directions are followed consistently.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Certification

High school diploma or GED required.

Experience

Experience in custodial work or a willingness to learn.

Special Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to read and understand cleaning, maintenance, and safety instructions.
  • Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment, properly handle cleaning supplies, and lift heavy equipment.
  • Ability to follow assigned instructions and perform physical labor.
  • Team-oriented, self-motivated, and neat in appearance.
  • Ability to work effectively around children and youth.
Equipment Used

Buffer, floor stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, electric drill, hand tools, carpet shampooer, lawn mower, edger, weed eater, and other custodial and maintenance equipment.
