Job summary

Forward Air Corp. is seeking a Forklift Operator in Grand Rapids, MI to load, unload, stage, and move freight with certified forklifts and other MHE. You will scan and document cargo, assist drivers, and mentor developing staff while maintaining safety and productivity.

The role requires 3+ years of dock experience, a valid forklift certification, and the ability to work in a dynamic, non-climate-controlled environment. Compensation is $21.50 per hour with standard dock schedules.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required.
• Valid forklift certification/licensure or ability to obtain before operating equipment.
• 3+ years of dock or warehouse experience.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing.
• Ability to read numbers, labels, barcodes and verify weights.
• Basic arithmetic skills for freight counts and quantities.
• Willingness to learn basic computer systems and handheld scanners.
• Safe operation of MHE such as forklifts, pallet jacks, carts, and other equipment.
• Regular and dependable attendance.
• Ability to work in a non-climate controlled environment with exposure to extremes.

Responsibilities

• Load and unload freight using forklifts and MHE, following safety procedures.
• Move, stage, sort, and position freight between dock doors and warehouse areas.
• Pick, pack, and prepare items for shipping and delivery.
• Assist drivers with loading/unloading per dock procedures.
• Label, scan, and track freight to ensure accuracy and documentation integrity.
• Identify damaged freight and report issues to supervision.
• Maintain a clean, safe dock environment and tools.
• Learn equipment operation and safety protocols on the floor.
• Support dock productivity and workflow efficiency.
• Work assigned schedules including nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
• Safely handle oversized or high-value freight.
