Job summary

J.S. Held LLC is seeking a mid-to-senior level Forensic Mechanical Engineer to support clients across the US and internationally.

Responsibilities include investigating failures, providing consultation, and serving as an expert witness in diverse property and equipment systems. The role requires a Mechanical Engineering degree, PE license, 3–5 years of forensics experience, and willingness to travel up to 50%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and 3–5 years of mechanical engineering experience in insurance or legal forensics.
• Residency in Midwest region of United States is required.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license is required; minimum licensed in resident state.
• Willingness to participate in expert witness work and provide court testimony.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Computer skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Must be flexible to travel approximately 30–50%.

Responsibilities

• Investigate the cause and origin of failures in mechanical systems across industrial, commercial, and residential sites.
• Perform field investigations and document damaged property.
• Research failure modes, codes, and recommend repairs or replacements.
• Prepare clear reports detailing opinions and conclusions for clients.
• Participate in multidisciplinary teams on large, complex assignments.
• Maintain relationships with clients and consultants.
• Stay current with company policies and ongoing training.
