Statement of Purpose
According to established procedures, the janitor cleans and services the building area. Moves furniture, equipment, and supplies within hospital departments and performs various environmental services duties to maintain a neat, orderly, and sanitary hospital environment. Floors are maintained to set standards in all areas. Performs minor maintenance functions as needed.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs critical mechanical component rounds/checks every two hours.
- Selects cleaning materials and supplies, prepares solutions according to procedures, and loads the service cart for transportation to work areas.
- Requests additional cleaning supplies and equipment as needed.
- Operates various cleaning equipment, including buffers, wringers, scrubbers, vacuums, wet & dry vacuums, and extractors.
- Cleans stairwells, elevators, and baseboards.
- Washes walls, windows, and furniture.
- If required to communicate in infant's rooms, speaks softly and conducts cleaning duties in a friendly manner.
- Encourages communication with children when appropriate.
- Communicates with adolescent and geriatric patients in a friendly and reassuring manner, being mindful of physical limitations such as poor eyesight or hearing loss.
- Cleans equipment and reports any repairs needed to the manager.
- Reports safety hazards to the manager.
- Returns unused supplies to the janitor closet, cleans carts, and ensures items are stored properly.
- May need to climb ladders, lift windows, or assist maintenance with heavy duties.
- Collects waste from hospital areas, sanitizes garbage cans, and maintains the compactor area.
- Collects or distributes linen and hazardous waste according to policies.
- Arranges furniture for meetings and community events.
- Interacts courteously with patients of all ages, maintaining a positive attitude and limiting conversations to nonpersonal, short subjects.
- Plans work areas in the absence of the supervisor based on priority.
- Evaluates new floor care equipment and products.
- Strips and applies floor finishes, buffs regularly to maintain gloss.
- Locks doors after completing work to ensure security.
- Attends training sessions and actively trains others in floor care techniques.
- May work varying shifts including days, evenings, nights, or weekends.
- Changes curtains, draperies, and cubicle curtains as assigned.
- Performs dust-mopping and wet-mopping of floors.
- High-dust vents, cabinets, and furnishings.
- Shampoos furniture, carpets, and rugs.
- Wears protective clothing in sensitive areas such as Surgery or Isolation units.
- Cleans morgue, delivery, birthing, and patient rooms as directed.
- Provides maintenance support, including repairs and assisting with patient moves or unruly visitors.
- Performs security patrols to ensure safety from fire, vandalism, and theft.
- Assists in emergency codes when needed.
Working Conditions
Standing all day, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 80 lbs., and working with chemicals and hazardous waste daily.
Job Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to read, write, and follow written or oral instructions. Three to six months of on-the-job or related experience is typically sufficient.
