Job summary

State of North Carolina - Department of Transportation is seeking a Safety Officer II (S) in Division 9 to evaluate heavy truck driver applicants and oversee the fleet safety program, including driver records checks, road testing, safety training, and compliance with safety regulations.

The role requires a North Carolina Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain it within 360 days of hire, plus knowledge of MUTCD and Microsoft Office. Pre-employment drug testing applies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in safety management, occupational safety, industrial technology, or related field with a minimum of two years of safety/health experience.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations and Worker’s Compensation Act; ability to administer safety programs.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate heavy truck driver applicants, including processing and interpreting driver records checks.
• Manage and run the division fleet safety program, including road testing, training and certification of drivers.
• Deliver safety training such as new employee safety orientation and fleet safety.
• Maintain equipment and injury statistics; assist with Workers' Compensation program.
• Conduct monthly unit safety meetings and safety audits of crews and facilities.
• Coordinate safety audio metric testing; assist division managers with the safety program and regulatory compliance.
