The Town of Apex invites applications for the position of Fire Inspector I at 315 West Williams Street, Apex, NC. This on-site role involves inspecting commercial and residential properties, enforcing fire codes, and educating the public on fire safety.

Salary range currently posted is approximately $71,492–$87,581 with a Monday–Friday schedule. The Fire Marshal oversees this position, which reports to the Fire Marshal and does not supervise staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Less than 1 year of related experience.
• Firefighter II certification required.
• Hazardous Materials Operations certification required.
• NIMS 100/200/700/800 certifications required.
• Fire Inspector I certification required.
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct fire inspections of businesses, schools, and residences for hazards.
• Enforce state building codes and NFPA codes during inspections.
• Schedule/perform annual inspections and issue deficient-condition reports.
• Answer questions from citizens, contractors and builders.
• Provide fire prevention education programs on request.
• Maintain accurate inspection records and data entry.
• Review construction plans for code compliance during construction.
• Perform firefighter duties on major fire calls as directed.
• Perform related duties as required.

ABOUT THIS POSITION:

Expected Hiring Range: $71,491.89 - 87,581.31
Work Location: 315 West Williams Street, Apex, NC 27502 USA
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

An employee in this class performs regular fire inspections of commercialand retail establishments, schools, and residences as required under State lawsand Town ordinances. Considerable public contact requires that the employeeexhibit tact and diplomacy in seeking compliance with fire laws, codes, rulesand regulations. The employee is subject to hazards associated with fireinspection, administrative, and firefighting work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold and hot weather, and exposure to various hazards such as high heat, chemicals,moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and working in high places.Employee is also exposed to atmospheric conditions and blood borne pathogens, may be required to wear a respirator and workin close quarters. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fire Marshal and is evaluated through observation,conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness ofwork performed.

This position reports to the Fire Marshal.

This position does not havesupervisory responsibilities.

A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:

• Conducts fire inspections of businesses, commercial buildings, schools, day care centers, nursing homes and places of public assembly for existing or potential fire hazards; enforces fire section of state building code and NFPA codes.
• Schedules and supervises annual fire inspections; conducts follow-up inspections to ensure that deficient conditions are corrected; prepares and submits reports of deficiencies; issues civil penalties for noncompliance when appropriate.
• Answers questions from private citizens, contractors and builders; researches manuals and code books for solutions and responses to violations; responds to complaints.
• Conducts fire prevention education programs, lectures and demonstrations upon request.
• Maintains accurate inspection records; enters inspection information in computer.
• Reviews construction plans for new buildings and performs code compliance inspections during the construction process as needed to assist the Town Fire Marshal.
• Performs the duties of a firefighter on major fire calls when directed to respond.
• Performs related duties as required.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

High school diploma or GED, Lessthan 1 year of experience
Possess IFSAC/Pro-Board or approved certifications of completion for or have reciprocity documentation for:
Firefighter II
Hazardous Materials Operations
NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800
Fire Inspector I
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license
