Job summary

The Town of Apex seeks a Fleet Services Master Technician to serve as the most-experienced SME for a diverse municipal fleet of about 800 vehicles and equipment. You’ll perform complex diagnostics, high-level repairs, and provide technical guidance to less experienced staff.

On-call duties may apply to support emergencies and weather events. You will report to the Fleet Services Supervisor and lead safety, quality, and best-practice initiatives while ensuring accurate maintenance records and

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED and extensive fleet/equipment maintenance experience.
  • 8 years of related job experience.
  • NC State Inspection License or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • NC Class A CDL or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • LEV Certification – L1.
  • ASE Master Technician certification T1-T8 or A1-A9.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SME for fleet maintenance and repair operations with advanced diagnostics.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting on gasoline, diesel, electric and alt-fuel vehicles.
  • Mentor technicians on complex repairs and diagnostics.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance, PMs and safety inspections.
  • Diagnose electrical/electronic system issues and verify repairs.
  • On-site road service and on-site repairs when feasible.
  • Ensure safety, quality control and proper documentation.

HOWYOU’LL MAKE AN IMPACT:

T he Division of Fleet Services isresponsible for managing and maintaining the Town’s fleet of approximately 800 vehicles and equipment. Anemployee in this class serves as the mostexperienced and technically advanced technician in the Town’s fleetgarage and functions as a subjectmatter expert (SME) for vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.

The Master Technician performscomplex diagnostics, advanced troubleshooting, and high-level repairs on adiverse municipal fleet consisting of light,medium, and heavy-duty vehicles (Class 1 through Class 8) and a broadrange of specialized municipal equipment supporting public safety, publicworks, utilities, parks, administration, and other Town departments.

In addition to performing hands-onrepair work, the Master Technician providestechnical guidance, mentoring, and on-the-job training to lessexperienced technicians; assists with difficult or intermittent repair issues;and supports Fleet leadership by promoting best practices, consistency, andquality control within the shop. Employees in this position may be subject to on-call or callback during emergencysituations or inclement weather.

Work is performed under generalsupervision and requires a high degree of independent judgment, technicalexpertise, and problem-solving ability.

HOW YOUWILL CONTRIBUTE:
  • Serves as the technical subject matter expert for fleet maintenance and repair operations, providing advanced diagnostics and resolution of complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic system issues.
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting and repair work on gasoline, diesel, electric, and alternative-fuel vehicles and equipment, including difficult or non-routine failures.
  • Assists, mentors, and provides technical guidance to technicians on complex repairs, diagnostic strategies, proper procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including oil and filter changes; lubrication of components; inspection, replacement, and servicing of fluids and filters; tire rotations; inspection for worn or defective components; and cleaning of emissions systems.
  • Diagnoses and resolves complex electrical and electronic system issues, including advanced fault isolation, circuit testing, wiring repairs, module programming, and system verification.
  • Repairs and maintains engines, hydraulic systems, and related vehicle systems including electrical, exhaust, transmission, brake, and HVAC systems.
  • Test drives vehicles and equipment before and after repairs to diagnose concerns, verify corrective actions, and ensure proper operation.
  • Responds to road service calls and performs on-site repairs when feasible to return vehicles and equipment to service efficiently.
  • Conducts North Carolina vehicle safety and emissions inspections and ensures accurate completion and retention of required inspection documentation.
  • Reviews work orders for accuracy and completeness; documents diagnostics, labor, parts, and corrective actions in the fleet maintenance management system; and assists with troubleshooting repeat or unresolved issues.
  • Assists Fleet leadership with quality control efforts, including verifying repair accuracy, identifying training needs, and recommending corrective actions or procedural improvements.
  • Identifies required parts and materials; verifies warranty eligibility; and assists in utilizing warranty coverage to control maintenance costs.
  • Operates and instructs others in the safe and effective use of shop tools and equipment including electronic diagnostic systems, vehicle lifts and jacks, tire equipment, air tools, battery chargers, cranes, welding equipment, and hand tools.
  • Repairs and maintains emergency, seasonal, and specialty equipment such as snow plows and supports emergency response operations through on-call or callback service.
  • Communicates effectively with Fleet staff and supported departments regarding repair status, technical issues, and operational impacts.
  • Ensures compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulations including OSHA standards, environmental requirements, and Town safety practices.
  • Participates in and supports ongoing training and continuing education to remain current with evolving vehicle technologies and to build the technical capabilities of the Fleet Services team.
WHAT SETSYOU UP FOR SUCCESS:

High School Diploma or GED and considerable experience in fleet,automotive, or heavy equipment maintenance and repair, including advanceddiagnostic and troubleshooting responsibilities.

  • 8 years of related job experience
  • North Carolina State Inspection License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • North Carolina Class A CDL or ability obtain within 12 months of hire
  • LEV Certification – L1
  • ASE Certified Master Technician T1-T8 or A1-A9 (each ASE certification may be substituted with 20 hours of in class manufacturer specific train ing)
