The Town of Apex is recruiting for a Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator to support the Traffic Safety Unit. The role focuses on investigating non-injury traffic collisions within Apex limits, responding to calls, and conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations while enforcing ordinances.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, hold a NC driver’s license, and be able to obtain Civilian Traffic Investigator certification within six months of hire, plus DCI licensing

Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $51,910.35 - 63,607.86
WORK LOCATION:205 Saunders Street, Apex, NC 27502 USA
SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, Dayshift

HOW YOU'LL MAKE AN IMPACT:

This position is primarily responsible for the investigation of non-injury motor vehicle collisions within the corporate limits of Apex. Work involves responding to calls for vehicle collisions; conducting preliminary and follow-up traffic investigations of collisions that result solely in property damage; traffic control and enforcing ordinances. Employees perform assignments directed by supervisors and the police communications center. Work involves independent judgment, discretion, and initiative in performing assigned duties.

Routine assignments are operational, however, may include special projects, specialized assignments, and assignment to other police divisions. Work requires extensive contact with outside agencies and the general public and may be conducted under hazardous situations. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through direct observation of work performance, and through review of written reports.

This position reports to the Traffic Safety Unit Sergeant.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

This position requires the employee to wear a uniform, radio and ballistic vest.

This position operates under the authority granted by North Carolina General Statute §160A-499.6, which allows municipalities to employ Civilian Traffic Investigators. Investigators do not possess arrest powers and are not sworn by law enforcement officers.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE:

• Responds to assigned calls for service involving traffic problems, parking issues, and other traffic concerns.
• Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of traffic collisions (excluding collisions resulting in personal injury).
• Interviews persons having potential knowledge or information concerning investigations being conducted.
• Collects, packages, and preserves physical evidence and found property of investigations.
• Prepares written reports and field notes of investigations.
• Testifies in court concerning investigations.
• Provides traffic control at the scene of fires, disorders, demonstrations, natural disasters, and related incidents to ensure public safety and the efficient delivery of emergency services. Provides traffic management.
• Assists victims of traffic accidents.
• Performs rudimentary first aid as required.
• Performs community service functions, including Community Relations presentations.
• Provides the public with information on ordinances, regulations, and police services.
• Performs special assignments as directed.
• Works rotating shifts as needed.
• Operates a vehicle during both the day and night under a variety of conditions.
• Performs other related duties as required.

WHAT SETS YOU UP FOR SUCCESS:

Graduation from High School or GED.

Possession of a North Carolina driver’s license and the ability to maintain a valid North Carolina class “C” driver’s license.

Ability to obtain certification as a Civilian Traffic Investigator from the North Carolina Justice Academy within 6 months of hire.

Ability to obtain certification to utilize DCI to investigate drivers’ licenses and license plates within 6 months of hire.
