Job summary

University Hospital in Newark, NJ is hiring a Financial Assistance Advisor to obtain and update patient insurance data for billing and to support charity care and public assistance inquiries. You will help patients understand coverage options and assist with NJ State programs, including Medicaid/NJ Family Care and ACA.

The role collaborates with the Financial Counseling and Charity Care Units, upholds patient confidentiality, and delivers Five Star Customer Service while guiding patients through

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible clerical experience.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in a physician’s office, hospital billing office, or insurance company.
  • Experience must include billing and collections and/or medical insurance-related activities.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a computerized environment required.

Responsibilities

  • Verify and update patient insurance information for billing purposes.
  • Obtain and follow up on insurance authorizations and admission notifications.
  • Process Charity Care, NJ Family Care, Presumptive Eligibility, and Public Assistance applications.
  • Educate patients on financial assistance programs and healthcare coverage options.
  • Provide financial counseling and support to patients regarding available resources.
  • Maintain confidentiality and deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Perform cross-functional responsibilities within the Financial Counseling and Charity Care Units.

Follows up on pre-certifications for In-patient admissions and Observations, calls insurance carriers to give notice of admissions, processes Charity Care, Family Care, Presumptive Eligibility (P.E.) applications and Public Assistance inquiry forms. Provides patients with information pertaining to various NJ State programs such as P.E. Medicaid/ NJ State Medicaid, NJ Family Care, Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Charity Care. Performs all activities in accordance with patients’ rights to health care access and confidentiality in a courteous and professional manner consistent with Five Star Customer Service policies. Compensationhourly

In compliance with New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is Probationary Rate TC/1925 $29.09– Two (2) Year Rate $30.48. University Hospital considers multiple factors when determining compensation, including (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s relevant work experience, education and training, key skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational needs.
