Job summary

Baker Concrete Construction, Inc, located in Colonial Heights, VA, seeks a Line & Grade Instrument Man II to coordinate surveying activities and ensure accurate layout for projects. You’ll work with the Party Chief, Superintendent, and foremen to implement layout, resolve constructability issues, and maintain field documentation.

You should have a High School Diploma with construction experience and strong math, teamwork, and safety skills.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma and 4 years’ construction experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 2 years’ experience as an Line & Grade Instrument Man I.
• Ability to respond to inquiries from customers and regulatory agencies.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to calculate proportions, area, circumference and volume; geometry & trig.
• Knowledge of industry tolerances and the coordinate system.
• Ability to work harmoniously with subordinates, peers, supervisors and clients.
• Team player who shares information, resolves conflicts and provides feedback.
• Ability to direct work.

Responsibilities

• Accurately maintain all physical site dimensions and controls.
• Accurate layout of building location, structures, and dimensions.
• Establish primary survey points and transfer building control on site.
• Establish secondary control and communicate procedures to crews.
• Provide data to the Party Chief to establish defining points.
• Calculate and monitor concrete hold quantities daily.
• Coordinate with Party Chief, Superintendent, Foremen and other trades.
• May serve as Party Chief on smaller projects.
• Set up and check surveying equipment for accuracy.
• Review drawings for discrepancies and write clarification requests.
• Collaborate with project leadership to resolve constructability conflicts.
• Interface with Formwork Engineering to provide layout for shop drawings.
• Maintain field notes and layout documentation.
• Ensure changes are communicated and drawings updated.
• Interpret tolerances and apply safest, most stringent limits.
• Follow safety guidelines and participate in toolbox talks.
