Job summary

Chesterfield County, VA is seeking a Building Inspector to enforce the Virginia Construction Code for residential and commercial structures through on-site inspections and a wide range of regulatory duties.

The role includes coordinating with county departments, responding to public concerns, and participating in code development while pursuing required Virginia certifications. A county vehicle and equipment are provided for teleworking and field travel.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; three years of code enforcement or construction experience preferably with strong structural emphasis.
• One year as Building Inspector I or two years as Building Inspector III; Virginia certifications preferred or to be obtained within stated timelines.
• Construction/engineering technology or vocational program degree/certificate preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret construction documents and plans; proficient with personal computer software used daily.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work on construction sites; strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Enforce the Virginia Construction Code for residential and commercial structures through on-site inspections.
• Coordinate regulatory activities with other county departments involved in the building permit process.
• Respond to and resolve concerns from citizens and customers regarding building code and construction issues.
• Attend meetings to convey department requirements and communicate between contractors, designers, and inspectors.
• Participate in Virginia Construction Code development representing Chesterfield at state/national levels.
