Job summary

Fairfax County is seeking a land development inspector to perform inspections of residential and commercial structures to verify compliance with the Virginia USBC. The role emphasizes safety, code adherence, and timely issue resolution while liaising with homeowners, developers, and inspectors.

Under supervision, you will identify violations, issue notices, coordinate with other agencies, participate in plan reviews, and provide expert guidance to the public.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; four years of residential/commercial construction inspection experience.
• Certification by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development preferred; required within 18 months depending on role.
• Valid motor vehicle operator's license.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building plans; knowledge of applicable codes.

Responsibilities

• Inspect residential and commercial structures to ensure compliance with the Virginia USBC and county regulations.
• Prepare documentation, issue notices of violations, and coordinate corrective actions with contractors.
• Participate in PLUS and plan review processes; liaison with homeowners, developers, and the public.
• Testify in civil or criminal proceedings and in appeals as required; respond to complaints
• Travel to construction sites and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
