Job summary

Aerotek is seeking a Field Service Technician in Ashburn, VA, with 75% travel. You will perform start-up, commissioning, installation, testing, troubleshooting and service support for switchgear and power distribution equipment across data centers and other facilities.

The role requires strong diagnostic skills, the ability to work with minimal supervision, and travel to regional offices and customer sites, including international trips.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of related electrical, mechanical, technical, manufacturing, construction, commissioning, or field service experience preferred.
  • Experience with start-up and commissioning of switchgear in data center environments is desirable.
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% and possess a valid passport.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform start-up, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, service, and repair of equipment such as switchboards, control panels, and power products.
  • Install and modify electrical and mechanical components and subassemblies, including panelboard interiors, circuit breakers, bus bar, subpanels, control components, power cabling, and control wiring.
  • Analyze system failures, identify root causes, and determine corrective actions for moderately complex technical issues.
  • Troubleshoot electrical circuits, control wiring, and networking equipment to restore proper operation.
  • Conduct electrical testing and commissioning of switchgear in data center and other facility environments.
  • Interpret and work from electrical wiring diagrams, schematics, work instructions, and technical documentation to complete tasks accurately.
  • Safely use hand tools, power tools, and electrical testing equipment in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
  • Serve as a primary contact in the field, representing the company professionally and maintaining strong customer relationships.
  • Provide guidance, support, and on-the-job training to entry-level technicians as needed.
  • Travel to regional field offices, vendor sites, and customer locations, including occasional international travel, to perform field service work.

The Field Service Technician performs start-up, commissioning, installation, testing, troubleshooting, and service support for switchgear and related power distribution equipment across multiple facility types, including data centers. This role requires strong diagnostic skills, sound judgment, and the ability to resolve moderately complex technical issues with minimal supervision. The technician serves as a trusted customer contact in the field and may provide guidance, support, and on-the-job training to entry-level technicians.

Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 1–3 years of related electrical, mechanical, technical, manufacturing, construction, commissioning, or field service experience preferred.
  • At least 1+ years of experience supporting switchgear start-up and commissioning required.
  • 1+ years of experience commissioning and start-up of power distribution systems, including switchgear, UPS systems, generators, PDUs, or related equipment commissioning activities preferred.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and power distribution systems required.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical wiring diagrams, schematics, work instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and electrical testing equipment.
  • Strong diagnostic, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Prior experience with testing, troubleshooting, service, repair, and commissioning of switchgear in a data center environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform start-up or installation of switchgear.
  • Valid passport and willingness to travel up to 75% to regional field offices, vendor sites, and customer locations, including potential international travel.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working in data center environments is preferred.
  • Background in power generation or power distribution for large-scale AI and cloud infrastructure is beneficial.
  • Comfort working with mechanical systems in addition to electrical systems.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high quality standards.
  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with customers and internal teams.
  • Adaptability to different facility types and job site conditions.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $44.00 - $65.00/hr.
