Role Summary:
The Field Service Engineer - Automation under general guidance and minimal supervision, performs a wide range of engineering tasks and ensures proper installation, service and commissioning of products and services. Provides technical support for installation and commissioning of projects and provides maintenance, breakdown emergency support and remote troubleshooting.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

As a Field Service Engineer - Automation, you will:

  • Perform troubleshooting activities at site locations during scheduled Port visits or at sea to diagnose problems, determine appropriate resolution, and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform installation and commissioning activities on GE Power Conversion automation systems at customer site locations during ship construction.
  • Develop requisite documentation to execute work e.g. commissioning procedures, maintenance procedures daily logs etc.
  • Perform a wide range of engineering tasks to ensure the technical integrity and proper installation and commissioning of GE automation systems at site locations.
  • Execute on-site project management and technical leader duties to resolve customer issues and provide customer satisfaction.
  • Develop presentations and provide training and instruction to customers.
  • Coordinate additional opportunities to serve the customer with the customer service team, parts, other FSE’s, repair services, sales, and product engineering teams.
  • Advise the customer of recommended upgrades, parts, and service opportunities to improve customer productivity and sell GE parts and services.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities for the customer and planning for inspections.
  • Provide support to engineering teams working on customer CMU’s projects.
  • Provide support in the bidding process for the customer CMU’s projects.
  • Provide on-call support in response to customer calls for service.
  • Complete timely service reports and other administrative requirements.
  • Perform work on-board vessels within GE / Customer safety guidelines either in shipyards or offshore.
  • Extended hours / overtime may be required during peak periods and emergency circumstances.
  • Domestic or overseas travel to customer sites for extended periods of time.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years of field service and/or commissioning experience in a field service/ commissioning environment with automation systems in a marine environment.
  • US Citizen with the ability to achieve security clearance for Department of Defense projects.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 85% of the time on short notice.
  • Must be physically fit to be able to board vessels offshore.
  • Must be able to pass a HUET and offshore survival course which includes activities in a swimming pool.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited college or university (or Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited college or university with a minimum 2 additional years of related industry experience).
  • Possesses leadership qualities that align with GE behaviors.
  • Background in a customer-facing position within a Service environment.
  • Ability to execute increasingly complicated assignments, which require considerable engineering skill and creative ability and independent judgment.
  • The work environment at onsite locations is of a construction type setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of trips, slips and falls. The noise level on-site or on-board ships can be excessive, personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required.
  • Strong computer proficiency and technical aptitude with the ability to utilize MS Office applications.
