Job summary

Lapmaster Wolters is seeking a Field Service Engineer to install, commission, and service equipment at customer sites across North America and beyond. You will diagnose mechanical and electrical issues, perform preventative maintenance, and coordinate with customers, engineering, and suppliers to ensure optimal uptime and performance.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Mechanical Technology, Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Maintenance, Engineering Technology required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in equipment installation, maintenance, field service, troubleshooting, or industrial automation environments.
  • Experience commissioning and servicing industrial machinery preferred.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting abilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, pneumatic diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.
  • Working knowledge of motors, drives, sensors, PLC-controlled equipment, servo systems, pneumatic systems, and hydraulic components.
  • Proficiency using diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to independently diagnose and resolve complex equipment issues in the field.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without current or future employer sponsorship.

Job description

The Field Service Engineer serves as a trusted technical partner to customers, ensuring the successful installation, commissioning, performance, and lifecycle support of company equipment. This role is responsible for maximizing customer uptime, driving operational excellence, and delivering an exceptional service experience while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.

As the primary technical representative in the field, the Field Service Engineer collaborates closely with customers, engineering, operations, and third-party vendors to diagnose and resolve complex equipment challenges, implement continuous improvements, and support long-term customer success. The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting expertise with a proactive, customer-focused mindset and a passion for hands-on problem solving.

Primary Responsibilities
Equipment Installation & Commissioning

Lead the installation, commissioning, startup, and validation of equipment at customer sites. Interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, pneumatic diagrams, and technical documentation to ensure proper installation and operation. Calibrate machine components, perform system testing, implement upgrades and modifications as needed, and train customer personnel on equipment operation, maintenance, and safety procedures.

Troubleshooting & Technical Support

Serve as the primary technical resource for diagnosing and resolving mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and controls-related equipment issues. Utilize diagnostic tools and structured problem-solving techniques to identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and restore equipment performance. Respond to customer inquiries, service requests, and emergency situations while partnering with engineering and internal support teams to resolve complex technical challenges.

Maintenance & Service Delivery

Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance to ensure equipment reliability and maximize uptime. Inspect equipment for operational effectiveness, execute repairs, coordinate replacement parts as needed, and document all service activities accurately. Work closely with customers and internal stakeholders to schedule and execute service activities with minimal disruption to operations.

Customer Relationship Management

Build and maintain strong customer relationships by delivering exceptional service and technical expertise. Act as a trusted advisor to customers by providing recommendations that improve equipment performance, reliability, and efficiency. Collaborate effectively with customers, vendors, and cross-functional teams while representing the company professionally during all field service activities.

Safety & Compliance

Promote a culture of safety by adhering to all company, customer, and regulatory requirements. Maintain safe work practices, utilize appropriate personal protective equipment, and ensure compliance with established industry standards. Safeguard company assets, including vehicles, tools, equipment, and service inventory.

Continuous Improvement & Professional Development

Maintain current knowledge of products, technologies, and industry best practices through ongoing training and professional development. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, support special projects, and contribute technical expertise to enhance customer satisfaction, service effectiveness, and overall business performance.

Minimum Requirements

Travel Requirements

Ability and willingness to travel extensively (75%) to customer locations throughout North America and internationally as required. A valid driver's license and ability to maintain a travel schedule that may include overnight stays and occasional weekends are also required.

Physical Requirements

This position routinely requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working in confined spaces. The employee must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 35 pounds. Work may be performed in manufacturing, industrial, and customer-site environments where exposure to moving machinery, electrical systems, elevated work areas, chemicals, and other industrial conditions may occur. Appropriate PPE and adherence to established safety standards is required.
