Job summary

Hurt & Proffitt is seeking an Engineering Technician in Lynchburg to support diverse construction materials testing across multiple project types. The role is field-based, focusing on soils, concrete, and asphalt testing, with hands-on training and opportunities to earn industry certifications.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including MS Office.
  • Commitment to safety and OSHA regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and testing requirements.
  • Perform soil density testing using nuclear density gauges in accordance with ASTM and VDOT standards.
  • Conduct field testing of concrete, including slump, air content, temperature, unit weight, and specimen preparation per ASTM/ACI standards.
  • Perform asphalt field testing and sampling per ASTM/VDOT standards.
  • Collect representative soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt samples for laboratory testing.
  • Assist with laboratory soils and concrete testing per ASTM/AASHTO standards.
  • Observe earthwork, foundations, concrete placement, pavement construction, and utility installation for compliance with plans and specs.
  • Maintain, calibrate, inspect, and operate testing equipment.
  • Prepare accurate electronic field reports documenting results and observations.
  • Communicate test results with project managers, contractors, and clients.
  • Follow QA procedures and maintain project documentation.
  • Adhere to safety policies and OSHA regulations in construction environments.
