Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and testing requirements.
  • Perform soil density testing using nuclear density gauges in accordance with ASTM and VDOT standards.
  • Conduct field testing of concrete, including slump, air content, temperature, unit weight, and specimen preparation per ASTM/ACI standards.
  • Perform asphalt field testing and sampling per ASTM/VDOT standards.
  • Collect representative soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt samples for laboratory testing.
  • Assist with laboratory soils and concrete testing per ASTM/AASHTO standards.
  • Observe earthwork, foundations, concrete placement, pavement construction, and utility installation for compliance with plans and specs.
  • Maintain, calibrate, inspect, and operate testing equipment.
  • Prepare accurate electronic field reports documenting results and observations.
  • Communicate test results with project managers, contractors, and clients.
  • Follow QA procedures and maintain project documentation.
  • Adhere to safety policies and OSHA regulations in construction environments.

We are seeking a dependable and motivated Engineering Technician to support a variety of commercial, institutional, industrial, transportation, utility, and energy projects out of our Lynchburg office. This field-based position plays an important role in construction quality by testing soils, concrete, masonry, asphalt, and other materials; observing construction activities; and documenting whether the work is performed in general accordance with the project plans and specifications. The position offers hands-on training, opportunities to earn industry certifications, and a path toward greater technical responsibility and career advancement.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and testing requirements.
  • Perform soil density testing using nuclear density gauges in accordance with ASTM and VDOT standards.
  • Conduct field testing of concrete, including slump, air content, temperature, unit weight, and preparation of compressive strength specimens in accordance with ASTM and ACI standards.
  • Perform asphalt field testing and sampling in accordance with ASTM and VDOT standards.
  • Collect representative soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt samples for laboratory testing.
  • Assist with laboratory soils and concrete testing as needed in accordance with applicable ASTM and AASHTO standards.
  • Observe earthwork, foundations, concrete placement, pavement construction, and utility installation for compliance with project plans and specifications.
  • Maintain, calibrate, inspect, and properly operate testing equipment.
  • Prepare accurate and well written electronic field reports documenting testing results, observations, and construction activities.
  • Communicate test results and field observations with project managers, contractors, and clients.
  • Follow established quality assurance procedures and maintain complete project documentation
  • Adhere to company safety policies and OSHA regulations while working in active construction environments.
Qualifications
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license in good standing with a minimum of three (3) years of licensed driving experience.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to accurately document field observations and test results.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in physically demanding outdoor environments.
  • Represent Hurt & Proffitt professionally while interacting with clients, contractors, and the public.
Preferred
  • Previous experience in construction materials testing, geotechnical engineering, construction inspection, or a related field.
  • Experience operating nuclear density gauges (Troxler).
  • Familiarity with ASTM, ACI, AASHTO, and VDOT testing standards and specifications.
  • Experience using construction documentation, management, and reporting software, including Metafield and Bluebeam Revu.
  • Current certifications such as:
    • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I
    • VDOT Soil and Aggregate Compaction
    • VDOT Asphalt Field Technician
    • NICET Construction Materials Testing
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Walk over uneven terrain and active construction sites.
  • Stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
  • Work outdoors in hot, cold, wet, dusty, and muddy conditions.
  • Travel to project sites throughout the region.
  • Frequent overtime, including early mornings and extended workdays, is often required during the warmer months due to seasonal construction demands.
Estimated Base Pay Range:

$19 - $24 per hour

How We Determine Pay:

Final compensation within this range is determined in good faith and is based on objective factors. These include the candidate’s specialized skills, level of experience, geographic location, and specific educational background or certifications.

Additional Compensation:

This position will be eligible for 401(k) matching and ownership through our ESOP and may also be eligible for incentive pay subject to company performance and performance-based raises.
