Job summary

City of Detroit is seeking a Field Engineer to perform civil engineering field work for the City Engineering Division. The role involves surveying, line and grade establishment, and land surveys for records and mapping.

Under general supervision, you will supervise subordinates, inspect sewer and water infrastructure, test materials, and review reports. A bachelor’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering plus 5 years of experience is required.

Qualifications

• Requires US Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Civil or Mechanical Engineering.
• Five years of progressively responsible field/civil engineering experience.
• Experience in surveying and testing methods for municipal construction work.
• Ability to interpret plans and specifications and prepare reports.

Responsibilities

• Direct a group of technical assistants to survey benchmarks and establish line and grade for construction projects.
• Supervise inspections to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
• Authorize payments to contractors based on progress and contract changes.
• Resolve inspection concerns and coordinate with department heads, contractors, and the public.
