Job summary

The City of Detroit is hiring a Field Engineer to supervise civil engineering field work in the City Engineering Division. The role includes directing a team, surveying benchmarks, and ensuring compliance with plans and specifications for municipal construction projects.

Responsibilities include inspecting sewers, water mains, tunnels, pumping stations, and various structures; testing materials; resolving inspection concerns; and coordinating with contractors and department heads.

Qualifications

• US Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (foreign equivalent accepted).
• Five (5) years of progressive field/civil engineering experience after degree.
• Experience with municipal construction surveying and inspection is required.

Responsibilities

• Direct a team of technical assistants to survey benchmarks and establish line and grade for projects.
• Supervise inspections to ensure compliance with plans, specs, and contracts.
• Inspect public sewers, water mains, tunnels, pumping stations, and related structures.
• Test construction materials and take subsoil test borings.
• Plan, assign, and schedule work; review reports for performance.
• Consult with heads, contractors, and the public on services and data interpretation.
• Authorize payments to contractors based on progress and contract changes.
