Job summary

BGE, Inc. is seeking a Field Archaeologist for a temporary project-based assignment in the Austin area, with potential travel to North Texas, Oklahoma, and nearby states.

The role focuses on phase one surveys, data collection, and field documentation to support cultural resource investigations. The candidate should hold a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or archaeology and be prepared for 10-hour field days, with travel, and a strong emphasis on safety, accurate reporting, and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or archaeology.
• Field school experience is considered for near graduates.
• Strong organizational and data-entry/reporting skills.
• Effective time-management, written communication, analytical and interpersonal skills.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Willingness to travel locally within North Texas and occasionally to other states.
• Passing a drug screening test and driver record check upon offer.

Responsibilities

• Conduct phase one archaeological surveys including pedestrian surveys and shovel testing to identify presence or absence of cultural resources.
• Assist with excavation and trenching activities as needed, primarily in Texas and surrounding regions (Possibly Oklahoma).
• Collect and document field data using tablets, GPS devices, and maintain detailed photo logs.
• Support preparation of reports, background research, and site documentation for archaeological projects.
• Collaborate with project leads and team members to ensure accurate data collection and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Participate in fieldwork under the guidance of experienced crew chiefs, with opportunities for mentorship and skill development.
• Communicate findings and technical information clearly to project managers and team members.
• Maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry; GIS experience is a plus.
• Adhere to safety protocols and carry out fieldwork in various weather conditions, often requiring travel within North Texas and occasionally to other states.
