Job summary

University of Virginia Department of Recreation is seeking a Facility Operations Supervisor to oversee daily operations, safety, and guest relations within UVA recreational spaces on Grounds.

The role emphasizes service-minded leadership, staff training, incident response, and adherence to university policies while maintaining clean, welcoming facilities for students, faculty and guests.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's degree or combination of education, experience, and or certifications in lieu of degree requirement.
• Experience: 1+ year of relevant experience.
• Licensure: None.

Responsibilities

• Establish a service-focused rapport with students, departmental staff, members and guests of the facility.
• Promote exceptional customer service to create a positive environment for members and guests.
• Take initiative, be proactive, and confident in decision making.
• Respond to emergency situations following procedures for pre- and post- incident handling.
• Maintain professionalism and cleanliness standards.
• Serve as a key link between members, Facility Operations Supervisor, and full-time staff by enforcing policies.
• Make periodic building walk-throughs and manage shift-specific operations of designated recreation spaces.
• Oversee cleanliness and orderliness of fitness equipment, recreational areas, and classrooms.
• Provide building security and lead emergency action plans, First Aid & CPR as required.
• Coordinate supervision of staff and training of student employees.

Facility Operations Supervisor

Team Members Responsibility:

• Establish a service-focused rapport and relationship with student and departmental staff, members and guests of the facility.
• Promote exceptional customer service to create a positive environment for members and guests.
• Take Initiative, be proactive, and be confident in decision making.
• Be proactive and prepared to respond to all emergency situations and follow procedure/protocol for pre and post incident/accident.
• Maintain a standard of excellence in professionalism and cleanliness.
• Serve as a key link between Members, Facility Operations Supervisor, and Full-Time Staff by the enforcement of policies and procedures as set forth by the department.

Area Specific Responsibilities:

Facility Operations:

• Make periodic building walk-throughs of the facility environment ensuring that all areas are functioning; addresses and communicates needs as warranted.
• Manage shift-specific operations of designated recreation spaces, including opening and closing of the facility, utilizing standard opening and closing procedures/documentation.
• Utilize appropriate systems and technologies for assigned tasks, documentation, and transactions.
• Oversee and inspect cleanliness of fitness equipment with regular cleaning and inspection rounds.
• Oversee and inspect orderliness of recreational areas, social spaces, and classrooms with regular cleaning and inspection rounds.
• Provide cleaning service support by maintaining exterior tidiness around the facility.
• Provide cleaning service support by inspecting the sweeping of lobby floors, vacuuming of lobby walk-off mats, cleaning of entrance doors & windows, cleaning and organizing reception stations, and emptying trash receptacles maintained by Facility Service Assistants
• Maintain awareness of facility maintenance needs and incidents; addresses, document, and communicate needs accordingly.

Customer Relations

• Provide a quality customer-service experience to all guests entering the facility based upon departmental core values.
• Serve as point of contact with event guests and event coordinators to ensure preparation, completion, and satisfaction for all space reservations.
• Serve as information agents of Recreation facilities, programs, and services.
• Serve as the "face of the facility" with active supervisory support engagement of all guests.

Employee Management

• Coordinate supervision and support of Facility Service Assistant staff with professional staff; trains new student employees, serves as positive role model for demonstrating Departmental Mission and Core Values.
• Ensure excellent customer service provided by Facility Service Assistants; resolves and mediates any conflicts or needs related to access, lending equipment, towels, keys, renting lockers; processing guest and group exercise memberships through Fusion software.
• Active monitoring student, member, & guest access to UVA recreational facilities
• Lead shift-specific delegation and accountability of assigned and realized facility needs.

Building Security & Safety

• Responsible for general safety and security of recreation facility.
• Lead and execute all emergency action plans to include evacuations and sheltering
• Administers First Aid & CPR by retaining certifications and participating in in-service trainings.
• Adhere to and enforce University and Departmental policies and procedures while maintaining safety throughout the facility.
• Lead and address all shift-specific operational safety needs (manage response plans, injured patrons, ejected participants, patron concerns, etc.)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor's degree or combination of education, experience, and or certifications in lieu of degree requirement.

Experience: 1+ year of relevant experience.

Licensure: None.

Additional requirements:

• Promote GREAT customer service in a RESPECTFUL environment.
• Available for opening/closing shifts, Friday nights and/or weekends, and academic breaks.
• Successful completion of department training.
• Successful completion of CPR Certification.
• Attend regularly scheduled Facility Supervisor staff meetings and in-service sessions.

The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. This position will also require an Education Verification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job may require sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling. Ability to lift/push/pull 25 lbs., climb ladders, stairs. Ability to use hands, often in repetitive motion, in order to complete work assignments.
