Job summary

Bowery Residents' Committee, Inc. seeks a Facilities Porter to sustain clean, safe, and welcoming environments across BRC’s residential, shelter, and program facilities in New York City.

The role reports to the Maintenance Supervisor or Facilities Manager and covers custodial tasks, basic maintenance, and proper waste handling. Daily duties include cleaning, restocking supplies, and assisting with setup for meetings and events while providing courteous service to clients and staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience considered.
• 1+ year in custodial or related roles.
• Knowledge of cleaning methods, sanitation, and safety practices.
• Ability to safely use cleaning equipment, custodial tools, and cleaning chemicals.
• Ability to follow maintenance procedures, work orders, and operational instructions.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness, safety, and customer service.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical duties including standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and carrying materials.
• Ability to work effectively within a team-oriented facilities management environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily custodial duties across residential, shelter, and office environments.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, sanitize, and disinfect areas.
• Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash, recycling, and other waste materials.
• Monitor and replenish cleaning supplies, paper products, and restroom supplies.
• Support facility readiness by setting up, moving, or arranging furniture, equipment, and supplies for meetings and events.
• Complete routine building inspections and report maintenance issues, safety hazards, equipment failures, and repair needs.
• Help building operations through light maintenance activities, such as changing light bulbs, and assisting maintenance staff.
• Communicate facility needs and maintenance concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor or Facilities Manager.
• Provide excellent customer service while interacting with clients, residents, visitors, vendors, and staff.
• Respond to cleaning emergencies and spills.
• Maintain cleaning logs, maintenance records, and complete assigned documentation.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
