Job summary

NC State University is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician - Journey Level to perform skilled maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC, piping, insulation, and various building systems on campus in Raleigh, NC.

The role involves hands-on work across domestic and industrial systems, multi-trade collaboration, and adherence to safety standards. A valid NC driver’s license and a high school diploma or equivalent are required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a commercial or university setting.
  • Mechanical insulation (pipe insulation) skills with a secondary trade set in plumbing, electrical and HVAC, if possible.
  • NC plumbing license preferred, or reciprocal, or local jurisdiction journeyman plumber certification.
  • CFC certification or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Solid working knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, and electrical system operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on domestic water, chilled water, hot water, steam piping, and ductwork insulation.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on plumbing and building systems, including air, gas, water, and waste systems.
  • Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems and fixtures, including lab drainage, sinks, toilets, valves, and piping.
  • Cut, thread, assemble, and install piping; connect valves; caulk joints; and test installations for leaks and defects.
  • Install and maintain gas, water, and sanitary fixtures, including appropriate supports, hangers, and foundations.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and plumbing issues, including complex and non-standard repairs, and develop effective solutions.
  • Support troubleshooting and maintenance of secondary electrical systems up to 600 VAC, including conduit, breakers, switches, panels, motors, and control circuits.
  • Assist with HVAC preventive maintenance and repairs, including temperature controls, thermostats, humidity sensors, and regulators.
  • Troubleshoot and repair steam systems and related equipment, including boilers, pumps, turbines, condensate systems, and air compressors.
  • Collaborate with HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and other trades to resolve multi-system issues and complete maintenance projects safely and effectively.
  • Follow established safety procedures, regulations, and university standards while performing all work.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public, and follow verbal and written instructions related to work assignments and operational needs.
  • Perform tasks requiring standing for extended periods, working in confined spaces, and utilizing various tools.
  • Lift, carry, and maneuver materials weighing 60-90 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Essential Job Duties

Join NC State University's Building Maintenance and Operations (BMO) team as a Facilities Maintenance Technician - Journey Level and put your hands-on mechanical skills to work supporting a safe, reliable, and comfortable campus environment. This position performs skilled maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC, piping, insulation, plumbing, steam, and other building mechanical systems.

You’ll work with a variety of systems, from domestic and chilled water to steam, gas, air, and waste systems, while also supporting HVAC controls and secondary electrical systems.

Safely climb and work from different types of ladders to access elevated or below-grade areas (such as roofs, above-ceiling spaces, and utility pits). Be exposed to and work in areas where insects or small animals are occasionally present. All essential tasks must be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Lift, carry, and maneuver materials weighing 60-90 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Other Responsibilities
  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions, even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Must participate in the quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This occurs every ten to fourteen weeks.
  • Must be able to work overtime and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education: High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s). Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

  • Experience working in a commercial or university setting
