Job summary

Commonwealth Senior Living at Charlottesville is seeking a Maintenance Assistant to support the Maintenance Director in maintaining the community’s physical plant. The role covers electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, and safety systems, with a focus on keeping areas safe, clean, and up to code.

Applicants should have at least three years in maintenance, English proficiency, and a high school diploma or GED.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a maintenance position.
• Able to read, write and speak the English language.
• Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, and building and fire safety codes.
• Experience working with a senior/geriatric population a plus.
• Willingness to be on call during emergency situations as the building operates 24 hours, 7 days per week.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine maintenance on grounds, parking areas, driveway, etc. by mowing, weed-eating, trimming, policing, sweeping, mulching, etc., as necessary.
• Performs routine maintenance and repair on the facility and equipment including plumbing, plastering, electrical, carpentry, mechanical, etc., as directed.
• Maintains safe operating and fire prevention practices.
• Maintains general plant and facility in good repair, ensuring a safe, clean and orderly environment.
• Replaces burned out light bulbs including exit lights and overhead lights and performs housekeeping in high areas.
• Maintains heating and cooling systems per manufacturer specifications and policies.
• Ensures maintenance supplies are replenished in work areas.
• Repairs emergency breakdowns promptly; collaborates to maintain a safe environment for residents and staff.
• Prepares vacant rooms to rent-ready within 72 hours of move-out.
• Advises the Executive Director on wear and tear, cleaning and deodorizing needs.
