Job description

Facilities Assistant - Afternoon/Evening Shift (Full Time, Non-Exempt)

The Facilities Assistant supports the safe, efficient, and well-maintained operation of the campus by performing building maintenance tasks, coordinating room and event setups, and ensuring all campus spaces remain clean and functional during the afternoon and evening hours. This role is an active contributor to the day-to-day operations of the Facilities Department, providing hands‑on support across maintenance, logistics, and building care.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with occasional overtime. The regular schedule is 11:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the first two months of employment, the schedule will be 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. to allow for onboarding, training, and familiarization with campus facilities, systems, and team workflows. After this initial training period, the schedule will transition to the standard afternoon/evening hours. From time to time, especially when school events or special activities are scheduled, there may be a need for occasional weekend coverage or adjusted hours. We do our best to provide advance notice, and we’re looking for someone who is reliable, adaptable, and comfortable shifting their schedule when needed.

This staff member reports to the Director of Campus Operations & Technology. The position is classified as an essential employee, requiring the employee to report for work or remain at work to continue plant operations during various emergencies, including, but not limited to, power outages, snowstorms, and school closures.

This position is subject to a six‑month introductory period. During this time, the new employee and their supervisor will meet regularly to review performance, clarify expectations, and ensure a strong foundation for success in the role. Successful completion of the introductory period is required for continued employment.

Essential Responsibilities
Facilities Operations & Maintenance
  • Perform a broad range of building maintenance tasks, including minor plumbing, carpentry, and hardware repairs.
  • Replace bulbs, tighten fixtures, and address routine wear-and-tear issues throughout campus buildings.
  • Lawn care and snow removal.
  • Conduct building walkthroughs to identify, document, and report repair or replacement needs.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe, organized working conditions.
  • Support seasonal facilities projects and summer campus work.
Room & Event Support
  • Set up, reset, and reconfigure furniture and equipment for classrooms, meetings, and campus events.
  • Assist with logistics for special activities and events across all campus areas.
  • Ensure spaces are properly arranged, equipped, and ready for use.
Building Care & Cleanliness
  • Maintain the cleanliness and functionality of classrooms, restrooms, offices, and common areas.
  • Restock supplies and remove trash to keep spaces ready for use throughout the day.
  • Perform closing routines, including walkthroughs, securing doors and windows, and turning off lights.
Coordination & Communication
  • Complete work orders and provide timely status updates to the Director of Campus Operations & Technology.
  • Collaborate with facilities, grounds, and security staff to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Attend department meetings and required training sessions.
Emergency & After‑Hours Support
  • Respond to minor building issues or safety concerns during or after shifts as needed.
  • Serve as an essential employee during emergencies, including power outages, severe weather, and school closures.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position requires sustained physical activity across diverse campus environments. Specific demands include:

  • Regular operation of hand tools, light maintenance equipment, and facilities machinery.
  • Ability to lift and manipulate objects up to 50 lbs; frequent carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, and balancing, including use of ladders at heights of 20+ feet.
  • Stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and significant fine‑motor dexterity.
  • Approximately 50% walking and 50% standing throughout the shift.
  • Ability to work in varied and sometimes adverse conditions, including tight or enclosed spaces, heights, and temperature extremes, both indoors and outdoors.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a facilities, building maintenance, or operations role, preferably in an independent school or similar institutional environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with light maintenance, repairs, and general building operations.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written and oral instructions and work requests.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with all constituents in a school environment.
  • A valid Connecticut driver's license.
