Job summary

VSP Vision in Mountain View, CA, is seeking an assistant to support optometrists during eye examinations. You will assist with pre-testing, gather patient history, and guide patients through the clinical experience.

The role requires strong verbal and written communication, the ability to handle multiple tasks, and teamwork in a fast-paced optical clinic environment. On-site work with potential cross-training across departments.

Qualifications

• One to two years of experience in related field
• Working knowledge of MS Office package
• Effective verbal communication skills to prioritize multiple tasks and to be available for incoming calls and inquiries
• Effective written communication skills to clearly document patient visits
• Excellent interpersonal and rapport-building skills
• Ability to ask appropriate and relevant questions to identify patient needs
• Ability to listen, process transactions and interact with patients simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
• For roles that are remote (i.e., Work From Home ( WFH )) or hybrid (i.e., partial onsite at a VSP location and WFH ), must demonstrate a high level of engagement in virtual environments, including maintaining camera presence during meetings to support effective communication and team alignment

Responsibilities

• Assist the Optometrist with eye examinations and patient eye care
• Gather patient history information and pre-test data
• Explain exam process and document information in patient records
• Take measurements and administer tests to assess visual capabilities
• Perform contact lens insertion and train patients
• Order contact lens materials and manage trials inventory
• Administer topical ophthalmic and dilation medications
• Scribe for the doctor and translate as needed
• Support patient flow and communication with staff and doctors
• Cross-train in different departments and assist with other office duties as needed
