Job summary

Symetra seeks an AVP, Deputy Chief Underwriter to provide strategic leadership for its Individual Life Underwriting team. You will mentor leaders, drive high-stakes case underwriting, and shape risk selection and market competitiveness.

You will oversee Large Case underwriting strategy and the HNWFN program, partnering across Distribution, Product, Actuarial, Legal, Compliance, Claims, and Operations to propel profitable growth. This executive role emphasizes calm decision-making and education.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of progressive life insurance underwriting experience, including complex and large-face-amount case underwriting.
• Proven leadership developing underwriting talent and leading high-performing teams.
• Recognized expertise in mortality assessment, financial underwriting, insurable interest evaluation, and risk selection.
• Experience guiding underwriting quality, audit governance, and governance processes.
• Ability to influence cross-functional partners and executive leadership.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for Individual Life Underwriting and advisement on complex cases.
• Lead and evolve Large Case underwriting strategy to support growth and market competitiveness.
• Oversee the High Net Worth Foreign National underwriting program with disciplined risk selection.
• Promote underwriting excellence through quality oversight, coaching, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Partner with Distribution, Product, Actuarial, Legal, Compliance, Claims, and Operations on business challenges.
• Develop and mentor underwriting leaders and cultivate a culture of accountability and learning.
• Represent underwriting in strategic initiatives and key business decisions.
