Job summary

Nationwide is seeking a Director of Life Underwriting to lead a team focused on national brokerage relationships, delivering high-touch underwriting support and sound, competitive decisions.

You will be responsible for complex medical and financial underwriting, including large-case opportunities, while coaching and developing talent to meet relationship needs and drive profitable growth.

Qualifications

• Deep life underwriting expertise and sound decision-making in complex or ambiguous situations.
• Experience handling or overseeing large-case life underwriting, with $10M+ cases preferred.
• Experience in BGA/brokerage/producer-driven life insurance environments.
• Relationship-focused mindset with strong communication to advocate underwriting decisions.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of life underwriters aligned to national brokerage relationships.
• Own the relationship-level underwriting experience with internal stakeholders.
• Provide senior judgment on complex medical and financial underwriting, including large cases.
• Use production, case-mix, and capacity insights to align talent and workflow to relationship needs.
• Develop technical depth through coaching and mentoring of the team.
• Represent Nationwide in field-facing underwriting negotiations and partner with Sales.
